Hello, My name is Terry Gravelin. My master Instructor level is “Kyoshi”. I have high-level Black Belts in three different Martial Arts and Brown Belts in two others. I have been involved in martial arts for 48 years and teaching my own schools for about 40 years. My teaching career started in Grand Rapids and I have been teaching in Cedar Springs Michigan for the last 28 years. I have taught and promoted well over 200 people to Black Belt and the higher Black Belt levels. My BB's get their certification directly from Okinawa, the birthplace of our Karate system. This in itself is something most schools cannot offer.
There are huge differences between karate schools. Some schools have a very rigid structure. There are many formalities in a strictly traditional setting. There are a lot of cultural differences that people teaching schools of this kind to incorporate into their teaching structure. I do believe that learning about the traditions and mores of the country is very important to immerse oneself in their style of choice but it does not increase its efficiency. This would be its ability to get the best result in the main goal of developing life-saving self-defense.
Our goal is to provide the highest level of traditional and contemporary programs developed to provide you with the following benefits:
1. Our emphasis is on establishing discipline and courtesy in each student. Learning how to follow the Instructors directions and respectful bowing are two areas that which this can be accomplished.
2. These programs build confidence and character by providing each student with control over their body and this develops an ability to stand up to peer pressure and other intimidating situations.
3. The movements of Karate develop coordination and increase strength and flexibility, which are very important to enjoying a full and happy life.
4. The awarding of Higher levels of Shorin-Ryu belts can give one a sense of achievement and accomplishment. Training for these tests and passing them enhances an individual’s ability to concentrate, as well as plan for and triumph over any learning hurdles one might have.
5. The foundation of Karate is in its self-defense value. We are very careful to teach everyone that Karate is only to be used to protect oneself, friends, family, and people that we love and care about and sometimes to protect the things we believe in.
6. Finally, Karate is good clean fun for students of all ages as well as a great way to burn off extra energy and reduce stress.
We believe in the value of becoming a Black Belt. We believe all the same qualities it takes to become a Black Belt are all the same qualities it takes to be successful in life and any other goals that we set for ourselves in our pursuit of happiness.
Our goal is to provide the highest level of traditional and contemporary programs developed to provide you with the following benefits:
